Here’s to the slave, Forced to enlist
To the kid on the drum, Who’d never been kissed
To the misfit who joined
With nothing to lose
The ones who survived the war
But drowned in booze
Here’s to the privileged
Who threw it away
The ones who fought bravely in war
But couldn’t take a peaceful day
Some fought without cause
They must’ve felt so alone
But they fought to bring their brothers and sisters home
To the ones the Army rejected
Because they were gay
They hid their secret
And fought anyway
To the natives who gave us
The language to win
And those who couldn’t live
With the weight of their sin
Brave souls stood for an idea
Much bigger than themselves
For a MORE perfect union
That’s why they fell
Every color, gender, and faith
Gave their final devotion
We owe them much more
Than a little emotion
Let us raise our glass
And rededicate today
To building in their honor
A more perfect USA
